Tom joined Brighton Surf Club as young nipper in the summer of 1966/67, which means this season will be his 50th year on the beach at Brighton. In the 1974/75 season he won the Club’s Surf Race Trophy for competing in the most Club swims and that same season he gained his instructor’s certificate. In 1974, the Australian Surf titles were held at Glenelg Beach and Tom competed in Junior R&R and Reserve Grade Surfboats. Since that year, Tom has attended every National Surf Titles, either as a competitor, handler, gear steward, team manager, towing the gear trailer and always a very enthusiastic spectator and supporter. Tom has held numerous management committee (Board of Management), positions, including Junior President/Chairman from 1989-1991, Club Gear Steward in the 1970’s and Clubhouse Manager for many years. Tom was a member of the Club’s Building Committee that worked so hard and tirelessly to finally gain approval for the construction of our magnificent new clubhouse that was completed in 2007. He has worked tirelessly in a variety of Clubhouse Operational positions and duties including bar duty and Saturday morning maintenance/cleaning team. He is an foundation committee member of the Brighton Jetty Classic and was awarded Life Membership of the Club in 2002. He is the person you are most likely to see if your visit Brighton Surf Club: unofficial caretaker, the “go to man”, the fixer of all things and a respected friend and mentor to all. Tom Schouten is truly the Beating Heart of the Brighton Surf Club.
